Shawwāl

SHAWWĀL IS THE 10TH MONTH OF THE ISLĀMIC CALENDAR

The first day of Shawwāl (the day of ‘Īd al-Fiṭr) marks the end of Ramaḍān. It is a day of celebration designated by Allāh, therefore Muslims should celebrate on this day. However we must ensure that we do not transgress the laws of Islām while doing so.

Rasūlullāh ﷺ said: Whoever observes the fasts of Ramadan and follows it up with six fasts in Shawwāl will be rewarded as though they have fasted the entire year.
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Some people believe that getting married during Shawwāl is discouraged. This is incorrect. In fact,
the Prophet s married ‘Ā’ishah (may Allāh be well pleased with her) during this month.

Shawwāl is the first month of the “Ḥajj season” (referred to as “Ashhur al-Ḥajj”). The rites of Ḥajj are
performed in Dhu ‘l-Ḥijjah but those intending to go for Ḥajj usually start preparing now. In the past when travelling took much longer, people would embark for Ḥajj in Shawwāl.
