Islam strongly prohibits backbiting. It is an evil sin that destroys
relationships & tarnishes reputations. It can lead to depression, bullying & conflict. It breeds
hatred & malice. The heart of the one doing it becomes tainted & it leads them to commit other
sins. Its punishment is severe & forgiveness may not be so easily earned. It is vital that we learn
how to recognise and avoid backbiting.

Backbiting is a major sins in Islam and Allah has strictly prohibited backbiting.
In this regard, the noble prophetic companion Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be well pleased with
him) has narrated that the Prophet Muhammadﷺsaid: “Do you know what backbiting is?”
They (the Companions) said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” Thereupon he (the Prophet
ﷺ (said: “Your mention of your brother with something he dislikes.” It was asked: “What if
what I am saying about my brother is true?” He (the Prophetﷺ (answered: “If what you are
saying about him is true then you have backbitten him, and if it is not then you have slandered
