Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) would say:
‘The mercy of Allah descends when His pious servants are mentioned.’
(Hilyat al-Awliya’)
Shaykh Muhammad Yusuf Ludhyanwi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentions in the introduction to the biography of Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandehlawi (may Allah have mercy on him) that the biographies of the accepted and beloved servants of Allah hold great significance because:
(1) Their mention and discussion is equivalent to being in their company;
(2) Allah’s special attention and mercy descends upon them and, therefore, their mention attracts the mercy of Allah;
(3) The study of their lives which encompasses many great characteristics of patience, steadfastness, sincerity, struggle and trust etc. gives us the beacon with which we can bring reform within ourselves;
(4) Their presence was a sign of the truth of Islam and through them the proof of Allah has continuously manifested in His servants.
Learning about the lives and examples of these luminaries is especially crucial for us in this day and age, where Muslims face an ideological onslaught from all the modern day “isms” and ideologies who aim to deform and distort Islam, and ultimately bend it to their ever-changing moral codes and ways of thinking.
However, history attests to the fact that Allah defends Islam and the truth using illustrious luminaries from among His righteous servants – those scholars who truly fear and revere Allah and stand firm with unwavering faith.
Allah mentions in the Qur’an:
‘Yet none truly fears Allah among His servants but those filled with knowledge.’
(Surat al-Fatir: verse 28)
