Science, or what was historically known as “natural philosophy”/“‘ilm tabi‘iyyat”, occupies a greater role in intellectual and social life today than perhaps any other time in human history. While science has undoubtedly benefited humanity greatly, there have been a number of challenges for believing Muslims interacting with science, especially given its newfound prominence.
Probably the biggest area of tension between the natural sciences and Islamic theology is the question concerning creation and evolution. Does conflict exist and, if so, how should Muslims resolve the conflict?
The course aims to:
a) offer a basic grasp of the ideas needed to navigate this question;
b) explore different solutions offered by Muslims; and
c) argue for an “orthodox” Islamic perspective.

Teacher Bio: Mufti Zameelur Rahman
Mufti Zameel completed his memorisation of the Qur’an as a teenager. He later went on to complete the ‘Alimiyyah programme in the Islamic sciences at Darul Ulum Birmingham, UK. He then furthered his studies and completed an Ifta/Takhassus fi’ l-Fiqh (specialisation in fiqh and fatwa) course at Dar al-Ifta al-Mahmudiyyah in Durban, South Africa under renowned specialists Mufti Ebrahim Desai and Mufti Husain Kadodia.
